DOLPHINS QBS
Dolphins' Tannehill takes snaps with 1st team
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill remains limited in practice, and his availability for Sunday's game at Indianapolis is uncertain.
Nursing a leg injury, Tannehill took snaps with the first team Thursday and threw on the run. But for the second consecutive day he practiced wearing a brace and thigh-to-ankle sleeve on his left leg.
Tannehill left Sunday's victory over the New York Jets in the first quarter with left knee and thigh injuries. Matt Moore replaced him and led Miami to a 30-9 win.
Coach Joe Philbin declined to discuss the likelihood of Tannehill playing Sunday.
"We're going to make the best decision for the team when we have enough appropriate information," he said.
JAGUARS MOVES
Jaguars sign RB Toston, waive rookie LB Marshall
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) The Jacksonville Jaguars have re-signed running back Keith Toston and waived rookie linebacker Brandon Marshall again.
Toston spent the preseason with the Jaguars before being waived on final cuts. He was re-signed last week and returned two kickoffs for 49 yards against Green Bay. He was waived Tuesday, replaced on the roster by Marshall.
Toston could be active again Sunday against Detroit since Maurice Jones-Drew (foot) is out and backup Montell Owens (shoulder) has missed more practice time.
Maybe more pressing for Jacksonville is the health of its secondary. Safety Dwight Lowery (ankle) has been ruled out against the Lions and starting cornerbacks Derek Cox (back) and Rashean Mathis (groin) sat out practice Thursday. Cox and Mathis were limited Wednesday, but it's unclear if they had setbacks.
BUCCANEERS-PATRIOTS TRADE
Patriots obtain CB Aqib Talib from Buccaneers
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) The New England Patriots have obtained cornerback Aqib Talib for their shaky secondary from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Talib will be eligible to play in the Patriots' next game on Nov. 11 after serving a four-game NFL suspension without pay for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.
The Patriots acquired on Thursday the former first-round draft pick and a seventh-rounder next year for their fourth-round choice in 2013.
New England (5-3) has allowed the fifth most yards passing in the NFL as it enters its bye week. It resumes play at home against the Buffalo Bills.
Talib, the 20th overall pick in the 2008 draft out of Kansas, has 18 career interceptions. He sat out the last four games when he decided not to appeal the suspension.
MAGIC-NEW BEGINNING
New-look Magic set to open season vs. Nuggets
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) The Orlando Magic take the first step in the post-Dwight Howard era Friday night when they open the season at home against the Denver Nuggets and it's still anyone's guess as to what direction they are headed.
Howard was traded to Los Angeles last August. Gone too in offseason trades are power forward Ryan Anderson and shooting guard Jason Richardson, which means the Magic are without three of the four top scorers from last season.
In fact, the only holdovers from last year's regular season rotation are guards Jameer Nelson and J.J. Redick and forwards Glen "Big Baby" Davis and Hedo Turkoglu. Throw in rookie head coach Jacque Vaughn, who brings a new style of play, and it's easy to understand why no one knows how the season will unfold.
VIRGINIA TECH-MIAMI
Miami takes Coastal lead, tops Virginia Tech 30-12
MIAMI (AP) Stephen Morris threw for two early touchdowns, both set up by Virginia Tech special-teams miscues, and Miami took a step forward in the chase for the Atlantic Coast Conference's Coastal Division title by beating the Hokies 30-12 on Thursday night.
Duke Johnson had a 7-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter and finished with 217 all-purpose yards for the Hurricanes (5-4, 4-2), who snapped a three-game slide.
Logan Thomas had a 73-yard scoring run on a quarterback draw for Virginia Tech (4-5, 2-3), which lost to Miami for just the third time in the last 10 meetings. The loss also ensures the Hokies' streak of eight straight 10-win seasons will end this year.
T25-NEBRASKA-KEARNEY-FLORIDA
No. 10 Florida beats Neb.-Kearney in exhibition
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) Will Yeguete, playing in his first game since returning from a broken bone in his foot last season, had 20 points and 11 rebounds in 24 minutes to lead No. 10 Florida to a 101-71 victory over Nebraska-Kearney in an exhibition game Thursday night.
Freshman Michael Frazier II led the Gators with 21 points, and starting guard Kenny Boynton added 14. Florida shot 60.3 percent from the field, including 11 of 24 from 3-point range.
The Gators have a week to prepare for their regular-season opener on Nov. 9 against Georgetown. That game will be held aboard the USS Bataan near Jacksonville, Fla. They follow five days later with a home game against No. 23 Wisconsin.
Florida is coming off consecutive regional final appearances in the NCAA tournament.
PGA ASSISTANT CHAMPIONSHIP
Ryan Vermeer leads PGA Assistant Championship
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) Ryan Vermeer shot a 6-under 66 Thursday to take a two-stroke lead after the first round of the PGA Assistant Championship.
The 34-year-old Vermeer, a PGA apprentice at Oak Hills Country Club in Omaha, Neb., had seven birdies and one bogey in his morning round on PGA Golf Club's Wanamaker Course.
Bobby Pancratz, PGA assistant professional at The Golf Club of Scottsdale in Arizona, was second. Two-time defending champion Frank Bensel of Purchase, N.Y., shot a 74.
